2 WEEKS BEFORE YOUR MOVE

all clothing or items to be cleaned or repaired. |

Return
things borrowed - collect things loaned. |

Make
arrangements for transferring bank accounts. |
 |
Arrange
to disconnect utility services. |
 |
Arrange
to collect utility service at new home. |
 |
Have
farewell parties and visits. |
 |
Arrange
to have appliance serviced for move. |
 |
Give
away articles you don't plan to take along, give to charitable
organizations, get signed receipts for tax purposes. |
1 WEEK BEFORE MOVE
 |
Disposal
of all flammables. |
 |
Have
car inspected and serviced. |
 |
Pack
suitcases ahead of time. Pack one to live out of the first
day in your new home. |
 |
Select
travel games. |
 |
Set
things aside to pack in car. |
 |
Arrange
for babysitter on moving day. |
 |
If
mover is not responsible, take down curtains, rods, shelves, TV
antenna if not being left for new owners. |
 |
In
special cartons plac items you will need immediately in your new
home, soap, towels, coffee, cooking utensils, etc. Mark
these cartons with "LOAD LAST - UNLOAD FIRST." |
 |
Make
up special cartons with "DO NOT MOVE" for articles to
be taken in car. |
DAY BEFORE MOVE
 |
Empty
and defrost refrigerator and freezer and let air at least 24
hours. Also clean and air range. |
 |
Line
up a simple breakfast for next day that won't require
refrigeration or much cooking. Use paper plates. |
 |
Finish
packing personal belongings, but leave out the alarm clock. |
MOVING DAY
 |
Be
on hand the day of your move, or have someone there authorized
to answer questions. |
 |
Accompany
van driver while he inventories your possessions to be moved. |
 |
Make
last minute check on your appliances to see that they have been
serviced. |
 |
Sign
(and save your copy) of bills of lading and make sure delivery
address and places to locate you reroute are correct. |
 |
Advise
driver exactly how to get to new residence. |
 |
Ask
to be advised of final cost. (This is determined after van
is weighed.) Have the needed cash, money order or
certified check to pay before van is unloaded at destination
because carriers require payment before unloading, unless other
arrangements have been made. |
 |
Strip
your beds, but leave fitted bottom sheets on your mattresses. |
 |
Before
leaving, check room and closet, close windows and turn all light
out. |
